Better late than never? Or, too little too late?
Early voting begins in just 25 days, and Congressman Andy Biggs is finally on Arizona airwaves in his campaign for Governor. The Team Biggs ad buy, in partnership with the Arizona Republican Party, includes a pair of spots and totals $1.75 million in spending over three weeks. Half of the money will be spent on digital and streaming services, and the remainder on traditional broadcast TV.
The ad buy comes following a string of opinion polls that suggest the race is tipping in favor of Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs. Since May, according to The Arizona Republic, Governor Hobbs has spent over $14 million on campaign ads - outspending her GOP challenger 15-to-1. For its part, the Biggs campaign told The Republic, “We can absolutely win this race while being outspent” - but acknowledged “it cannot be at the current margins.”
Traditionally, political campaigns first air a positive biographical spot to introduce the candidate to voters. The Biggs campaign may not have that luxury, given what little time remains before ballots go out, and has instead opted to go negative by attacking Governor Hobbs as corrupt. The TV ad highlights a State contractor that received a rate increase following a large donation to the Governor’s political operation. Though Attorney General Kris Mayes declined to prosecute the case, it has continued to provide political fodder for Biggs and his supporters.
The biggest question now is whether the RGA or some other large benefactor will come to Biggs’ aid in the waning weeks of the campaign. The DGA has already invested $10 million in securing Governor Hobbs’ victory, while the RGA remains mum.
