Veridus Advisory: Arizona Primary Election 2026 Results

Dear Clients,
Today’s Arizona Primary Election was uneventful, with light turnout and no major issues reported. This was the first election in which voters who brought their completed early ballot were given the option to have their identity validated and ballot immediately tabulated. Elections officials hope this will reduce the number of so-called “late earlies,” and the vast majority of ballots are expected to be tabulated within the next couple days.
Below is what we know as of 9:00 PM Tuesday regarding some of the closest-watched races:
CD-1:
The CD-1 outcome in November figures to help determine control of Congress, so nomination battles for the Primary have been hard fought on both sides of the political aisle.
Former legislator Amish Shah is currently leading in his rematch against Marlene Galán-Woods for the Democratic nomination. On the GOP side, former Arizona Cardinal kicker and Trump-endorsed Republican Jay Feely enjoys a healthy lead over former state Rep. Joseph Chaplik and businessman John Trobough.
CD-4:
Incumbent Rep. Greg Stanton (D-Phoenix) easily dispatched of progressive insurgent Kai Newkirk and is the heavy favorite to win his fifth congressional term in November.
CD-5:
Former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb (R) rode the Trump endorsement to a GOP Primary victory over a spirited challenge from East Valley businessman Daniel Keenan. Lamb’s win almost certainly means he’ll be the next Representative of this deep red district.
Governor
November’s main event is set: Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs will face Trump-endorsed Congressman Andy Biggs. The Republican romped to an easy win Tuesday in defeating a GOP field that included Congressman David Schweikert, among others.
Be on the look-out for third-party candidates. Risa Lombardo claimed the Green Party’s nomination, despite allegations from Green Party officials who allege the former Republican precinct committeewoman is a sham candidate running to steal progressive votes from Gov. Hobbs. Teri Ann Hourihan holds a narrow lead over businessman Hugh Lytle for the No Labels Party’s nomination.
Secretary of State
State Rep. Alex Kolodin leads former AZGOP Chairwoman Gina Swoboda for the Republican nomination and the right to face Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes in the General Election. Green Party candidate Duwayne Collier won his party’s nomination and will also be on the November ballot.
Attorney General
Senate President Warren Petersen leads attorney Rodney Glassman in this bruising GOP Primary race. Incumbent Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, awaits the winner.
State Treasurer
Businessman Elijah Norton has a sizable lead over State Board of Education President Katherine Haley in the GOP nomination fight for the open Treasurer’s Office seat. Democrat Nick Mansour won the Democratic nomination unopposed.
Superintendent of Public Instruction
Term-limited Treasurer Kimberly Yee is leading Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne for the GOP nomination for SPI. On the Democratic side, former Glendale Community College President Teresa Leyba Ruiz is leading over Brett Newby.
Corporation Commission
Corporation Commissioners Kevin Thompson is the top vote-getter. State Rep. Ralph Heap is currently ahead of Corporation Commissioner Nick Myers for the second spot that advances to November.
Senate:
LD-8:
State Sen. Lauren Kuby (D) leads Deborah Nardozzi in the Democratic Primary in this deep blue, Tempe-centric district.
LD-17:
Republican Chris King leads Anthony Dunham in the GOP Primary for the race to succeed state Sen. Vince Leach in this swing district. Edgar Soto is the Democrat’s choice to attempt to break the Republicans' legislative majority.
LD-20:
State Rep. Alma Hernandez is trying to move to the Senate, and leads Tucson City Councilmember Rocque Perez in the Democratic Primary for this progressive district.
Arizona House of Representatives:
LD-13:
Two East Valley House seats are up for grabs in this swing district. Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke and Janet Weninger, wife of state Rep. Jeff Weninger, won the GOP nominations, and will face Democrats Rockee Armstrong and Jacob Weinberg.
LD-21:
In one of the more intriguing primaries, state Rep. Consuelo Hernandez teamed up with fellow Democrat Martiza Higuera to take out Rep. Hernandez’s seatmate: Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton. The result of that effort remains unclear. Rep. Hernandez leads all vote-getters and Rep. Stahl Hamilton is over a dozen votes behind second-place finisher Miranda Lopez.
