It took only two weeks for the “Big Beautiful Bill” to receive Big Beautiful Backlash.
That backlash has come in the form of tech gazillionaire Elon Musk, who has now broken with President Trump in a major way - while lambasting BBB as a “disgusting abomination.”
Musk’s salvos provide cover to BBB’s conservative/libertarian Congressional opponents. That includes members Trump will need to advance BBB in the U.S. Senate - namely, votes from Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), each of whom piggybacked on Musk’s criticisms.
President Donald Trump’s latest tête-à-tête stands out as it marks one of the first times in his political career when he hasn’t owned the terms of the debate or arena in which it's fought. The Trump/Musk feud escalated Thursday with calls for canceled government contracts and impeachment.
Countless news pieces and academic works have credited Trump’s prolific use of X (formally known as Twitter) as essential to his rise to power. Now clashing with Musk, the President finds himself with an opponent who loves posting to social media as much as he does.
