Arizona’s congressional delegation will soon return to full strength, as this coming Tuesday brings the CD-7 special election to replace deceased Congressman Raúl Grijalva.

Former Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva, a Democrat, is the heavy favorite to succeed her father in the deep blue southern Arizona district. The winner will take office immediately upon results being certified, and will serve the remainder of the term that expires in January 2027.

CD-7 isn’t the only district likely to see a change in leadership between now and 2027.

In CD-6, Republican Congressman Juan Ciscomani again can expect a tough re-election fight in 2026 as he represents one of the nation’s most competitive districts. He remains a top target of the DCCC, and faces a formidable challenger in Democrat and former Marine Joanna Mendoza. A little over a year out from the General Election, this race is anyone’s guess.

In CD-5, GOP Congressman Andy Biggs is running for Arizona Governor - one of over two-dozen lawmakers nationally that are headed for the exits. Regardless of being an open seat, the conservative East Valley district is almost certain to remain in Republican hands.

Congressman Biggs may not be the only member of Arizona’s delegation who runs for Governor next year; Republican Congressman David Schweikert reportedly continues to mull a gubernatorial campaign. One big difference: Congressman Schweikert represents a swing district that Democrats have had on their short list for multiple cycles. His absence from the race would only heighten the stature of CD-1 and send Republican and Democratic candidates scrambling.

If Congressman Schweikert is going to get into this race, he’ll need to make an announcement very soon. Keep an eye on this one.
